The PocketStation was a peripheral for the PlayStation's memory card. It was only released in Japan on 23 January 1999 and was discontinued sometime in July 2002. The system has been called a combination of a memory card and a personal digital assistant. In order to use the memory card function, it must be plugged into the PlayStation's memory card slots.

Software for the system was usually found as extra content on the game discs. However, stand-alone software could also be downloaded through the PlayStation.

Using built-in infrared technology, data such as game saves could be transferred from PocketStation to PocketStation. This technology also allowed for multiplayer gaming.
